Reconversion of the old slaughterhouse of Porto

Well done, great news for Porto!!

One of the anchor projects of the strategic masterplan for the oriental part of the city is finally going ahead with the signing of the agreement with Mota Engil for the reconversion of the old slaughterhouse (“Matadouro Industrial do Porto”).

What does it consist of?

The project will have more than 20.000 sqm, aiming an integrated and diversified use, with office, retail, leisure and cultural areas for the local community. The construction works should start in September 2021, with a 2-year deadline for its finish and with an investment around €40M.  

The implementation is carried out through a concession, for a period of 30 years. Mota Engil will be responsible for the rehabilitation works and will ensure the lease of 60% of the construction area, with office, retail and leisure areas. The Municipality will occupy about 40% of the construction area where it will develop several cultural and artistic activities. 

What results can be expected?

• Job creation
• Intensification of the in-flows from the outskirts to this area of the city
• Attract new residents and new economic activities and urban dynamics
• Urban rehabilitation of neighboring areas
• Qualification of urban space in the surroundings
• Mitigation of the negative impacts of infrastructure density in the area.
